Sadak 2 (transl. Road 2) is a 2020 Indian film directed by Mahesh Bhatt and produced by Mukesh Bhatt under their banner Vishesh Films. The film is the sequel to the 1991 film Sadak. The sequel stars Sanjay Dutt, Pooja Bhatt, Alia Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapur.[2][3] The film marks Mahesh Bhatt’s return as a director after 20 years.[4]
Sadak 2 is about Ravi’s depression and how he helps a young woman’s encounter with a godman, who is out to expose this fake guru running an ashram.[4] The shooting began on 18 May 2019,[5] and the film was shot in Ooty, Mumbai, Mysore and Uttarakhand. The film was premiered on 28 August 2020 on Disney+ Hotstar.[1]
The film’s trailer was released on 12 August 2020 on YouTube, and within a week, it became the second most-disliked video on the website due to vote brigading.[6][7][8]
The film follows Ravi, 29 years after the incidents of the first film. The suicidal taxi driver plans to shut shop when a young girl, Aarya, compels him to take her on a life-altering journey to Kailash where she has an encounter with a godman and is out to expose this fake guru running an ashram.
The film was announced on 20 September 2018 by Alia Bhatt on Twitter, where She revealed the details of the film.[13] On 8 April 2019, it was confirmed that the principal photography will commence in middle of May 2019.[2]
The principal photography began on 18 May 2019.[5] On 19 May 2019, Makarand Deshpande was confirmed to play the main antagonist in the film. Alia Bhatt joined the filming from 21 May 2019.[14] The first schedule of the film was completed in the third week of May in Mumbai. The second schedule began in Ooty in mid July 2019.[15][16]
Sadak 2‘s trailer faced vote brigading owing to the nepotism debate sparked after the suicide of Indian actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Speculating that he had despaired of being shut out of the film industry due to hiring practises that favoured children of established film personalities, Rajput’s fans blamed Bollywood insiders, including Sadak 2 director Mahesh Bhatt and his daughter Alia, one of its stars. Alia Bhatt had once spoken dismissively of Rajput on a chat show.[6][7][17] Within two days of its release, the trailer had received 5.3 million dislikes on YouTube.[18]
The film was initially scheduled for release on 25 March 2020, but was pushed to 10 July 2020.[19] It was again pulled from the release schedule as the shooting was delayed because of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in India. [20]
On 29 June 2020, the streaming service Disney+ Hotstar conducted a virtual press conference, where Alia Bhatt announced that the film was released on Disney+ Hotstar exclusively, premiered on 28 August 2020.[21][1]
The music for the film was composed by Jeet Gannguli, Ankit Tiwari, Samidh Mukherjee, Urvi and Suniljeet while the lyrics written by Rashmi Virag, Vijay Vijawatt, Shabbir Ahmed, Suniljeet and Shalu Vaish.
